The council’s recreation role
Recreation is one of Greenhaven Council’s local responsibilities. The function is concerned with opportunities for people to take part in local recreational activity, enjoy community life and make use of opportunities supported by the council where provision has been established.
Recreation is broader than organised sport. It can include informal activity, community events and other opportunities that support participation and wellbeing. Sport as a wider policy area may sit elsewhere. Greenhaven Council listings identify the recreation services and activities that the council actually provides or supports.
Activities and participation
Recreation pages will show the activities and facilities available through Greenhaven Council and any clearly identified partner provision. Where a programme is targeted at a particular place or group, the listing will explain who it is for and how to take part.
Facilities and programmes
Where the council operates or commissions a facility or programme, residents will be able to find clear information about who runs it, where it is, when it is available, how to take part and whether any booking or eligibility arrangement applies.
No Greenhaven Council recreation facility, programme, timetable or booking system is currently published because no such operational provision has yet been established.
Community and voluntary provision
Many recreational activities may be run by independent community groups rather than the council. Greenhaven Council can signpost or support those opportunities where appropriate, but the website will distinguish council provision from independent activity so residents know who is responsible.
Finding activities and facilities
As services commence, this section will list Greenhaven Council recreation provision and clearly identified opportunities run by partner or community organisations.
Finding recreation in Greenhaven
When Greenhaven recreation services open, you will be able to browse current council activities and facilities by location and type. Each listing will include the organiser, venue, date or regular time, who the activity is for, booking arrangements and any charge.
Facilities
If Greenhaven Council operates recreation spaces, meeting places or other facilities, each facility will have its own page with the location, opening arrangements, accessibility information, available spaces and the route for enquiries or bookings where those arrangements exist.
Who is responsible
| Organisation | Role affecting recreation in Greenhaven |
|---|---|
| Greenhaven Council | Local recreation services and local delivery where facilities, programmes or support are established within the council's remit. |
| Department for Culture, Media and Recreation | National recreation policy and the wider national culture and recreation system. |
| National Recreation Service | National recreation and session functions assigned to the agency; it does not replace Greenhaven Council's local recreation role. |
| Independent clubs and community organisations | Their own activities, bookings, supervision, safeguarding and other responsibilities unless a formal agreement assigns a specific role to the council. |
Independent activities
Community organisations may run recreation independently of the council. Greenhaven Council can signpost relevant opportunities, but the organiser will be named so residents know who is responsible for bookings, supervision, safeguarding and any payment.
